Dental bridges are an effective solution to replace a missing tooth or teeth. You may need a dental bridge if you have a gap caused by a missing tooth, as it can impact your smile, oral health, and the alignment of your teeth.

To fill the gap, we create crowns for the teeth on either side of the space and attach a false tooth to the crowns, effectively replacing the missing tooth.

What to know:

  • A bridge requires extra oral health tools like floss threaders to clean under the bridge.
  • Bridges can replace 1 or multiple missing teeth.
  • They are covered under most insurance plans.

Procedure Length

Getting a dental bridge is similar to getting a crown, but it involves more teeth. Bridges can replace one tooth or multiple teeth, depending on your needs. They can also be designed to work with implants.

The preparation process for a bridge varies based on the number of teeth involved. After we send the digital scan of the prepped teeth to the lab, it typically takes up to two weeks for the lab to fabricate the bridge and return it to us.

Lifespan

The lifespan of a bridge can vary from patient to patient, if everything is well cared for we can expect a bridge to last 5 – 10 years.

FAQ related to Bridges

What are the different types of bridges?2024-08-15T19:39:41+00:00
  1. Traditional Dental Bridge: This is the most widely used type of dental bridge, featuring crowns (caps) on both sides with artificial teeth (pontics) filling the gap in between. Dentists recommend traditional dental bridges when there are healthy natural teeth on either side of the missing tooth.

  2. Cantilever Dental Bridge: Similar to the traditional bridge, a cantilever bridge has a crown on only one end instead of both. Dentists use this type when there are natural teeth on just one side of the gap. However, cantilever bridges tend to be less durable than traditional bridges due to their design.

  3. Maryland Dental Bridge: Also known as a resin-bonded bridge, a Maryland bridge uses metal wings instead of crowns to anchor the bridge. The wings are bonded to the backs of the adjacent teeth to secure the bridge in place. Maryland bridges are usually used for front teeth as they are not strong enough to handle the chewing forces of back teeth.

  4. Implant-Supported Bridge: This type of bridge resembles a traditional bridge but is supported by dental implants instead of natural teeth. Before placing the bridge, the implants must fully integrate with the jawbone, a process that typically takes three to six months, though it may take longer in some cases. Implant-supported bridges are used when three or more consecutive teeth are missing.
