Oral Exam

Before starting any teeth whitening treatment in St. John’s, our team conducts a thorough exam to check your gum and bone health. We carefully measure the depth of the pockets between your teeth and gums to screen for signs of periodontal disease.

In-office Whitening

The Philips Zoom® in-office system brightens your teeth to your preferred shade in about an hour. The whitening gel is activated by a high-intensity lamp. Afterward, we apply dental fluoride for five minutes to strengthen enamel and reduce sensitivity. With its higher concentration, most patients see results after just one application.

Take-home Kits

Many patients prefer whitening their teeth at home using a whitening gel in plastic trays that fit over their teeth. Professional take-home kits are available in various peroxide concentrations to meet different needs. Your dentist will provide instructions and aftercare information for the at-home procedure.

FAQ related to teeth whitening

How often can I whiten my teeth?2026-06-17T16:45:40+00:00

Most dentists recommend whitening no more than once or twice a year for maintenance, with a full treatment every one to two years depending on how your results hold. Over-whitening can weaken enamel and increase sensitivity. Your dentist will advise a schedule that is appropriate for your teeth.

Can I whiten my teeth if I have crowns or fillings?2026-06-17T16:45:18+00:00

Whitening agents do not change the colour of dental restorations. This means visible restorations on your front teeth may not match your newly whitened natural teeth. Your dentist will assess this before recommending whitening and discuss whether any restorations need to be replaced afterward to match your new shade.

How soon after whitening can I drink coffee?2026-06-17T16:44:53+00:00

If you can, avoid coffee, tea, red wine, and dark foods for 24-48h after treatment. After that, the risk is more gradual, rinsing with water after consuming staining drinks is a practical everyday habit.

Why are my teeth getting yellow again after whitening?2026-06-17T16:44:30+00:00

Re-staining after whitening is normal and gradual. The most common causes are regular consumption of coffee, tea, red wine, or dark-coloured foods, combined with natural enamel ageing. Improving your maintenance habits and doing a top-up treatment when needed will restore your results.

Does teeth whitening permanently whiten your teeth?2026-06-17T16:43:51+00:00

No, teeth whitening is not permanent. Teeth naturally re-stain over time from food, drink, and aging. However, with good maintenance habits and periodic top-up treatments, the results can be maintained for years.

How long does teeth whitening last?2026-06-17T16:43:26+00:00

Professional teeth whitening typically lasts between six months and two years. How long your results last depends mainly on your diet, your oral hygiene habits, and whether you do periodic top-up treatments.

Can I whiten my teeth if I have sensitive teeth?2026-05-12T18:29:27+00:00

Often yes, but it is important to discuss this with your dentist first. There are gentler whitening options available, and your dentist can recommend the best approach for your situation.

Is teeth whitening covered under insurance?2024-07-25T17:29:44+00:00

Teeth whitening is NOT covered under insurance plans.

I have a cavity. Can I still get my teeth whitened?2024-07-25T17:26:34+00:00

It is recommended to have your cavities treated before teeth whitening so that your tooth doesn’t further decay and is strong enough to withstand the peroxide.

What are the side effects of teeth whitening?2024-07-25T17:12:03+00:00

Most patients experience no issues during this treatment. Some patients may experience temporary tooth and gum sensitivity.

Is teeth whitening safe?2024-07-25T18:15:13+00:00

Yes, professional teeth whitening under the supervision of a dental professional is safe for your teeth and gums. If you are not a suitable candidate for teeth whitening, you will be advised by our team.
